Torticollis is a persistent neck asymmetry. Your baby may have her head turned to one side, or your baby may have her head tilted to one side. Torticollis may be positional (there is no muscle tightness) and is often seen in combination with plagiocephaly. Torticollis can also be caused by a tight neck muscle, which limits your baby’s neck range of motion.
Contact your pediatrician or pediatric physical therapist if you suspect your baby has torticollis. Torticollis does not typically resolve on its own. Outcomes are optimal when treatment is initiated before 3 months of age.
